Chinese ice skaters Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo brought home the first Olympics gold medal in the sport. In their first international television interview since returning to Beijing, the golden couple reveals to Talk Asia host Anjali Rao what keeps them so in sync. The three-time world champions competed in the last two winter games but only managed to bring home two bronze medals. Although the couple hung up their skates in 2007, the desire to hear the national anthem at the victory ceremony lured them from retirement. "It was a big decision when Zhao Hongbo decided to come back into competition," said Shen. It was a decision that paid off when the pair finally won the gold medal with a new world record of 216.57 points. Zhao describes what Olympic glory means to them: "The Olympics are so different from all the other competitions because it only happens once every four years. It's been the dream of Chinese athletes for many years because it's the most important games. It takes a lot of confidence and other factors to win." And Shen continues: "Olympic gold is our lifelong dream. Ever since we became athletes, we had dreamt of competing at the Olympics and winning a gold medal. We've had this dream for years. So when the medal came to us, it was hard to believe." The throw triple alchow and carry lift don't come easy and requires many of practice. Injuries associated with this physically grueling sport are common to the pair as Shen says: "This time around, we have more pains then in previous years. We're training with injuries all the time. We were praying to be in good shape by the time we got to the Olympics." Their successful career also comes with a love story when Zhao got his knee down to propose to Shen at the World Championships in Tokyo. Oblivious to what Zhao was going to do, Shen immediately followed suit and kneeled at the same time. "It took me a very long time before I knew what he was doing. He later asked me: ‘why did you also get on your knees when I did?' and I said: ‘I was just following you'. I didn't realize he was proposing to me. For so many years, I thought we were in sync. But when it came to the time to be really in sync, I failed." After accomplishing Olympic gold, the happily married couple is ready to hang their skaters. They reveal to Rao that their next big project will be to have a baby. "I am hoping we have twins. I would like a boy and a girl. It will be another happiest moment in our lives," says Zhao.
